Blackhead Disease is a re-emerging disease in turkeys and has currently no licensed prophylactic or therapeutic option

Following the withdrawal of efficacious drugs in certain countries blackhead disease (histomonosis) has resurfaced as one of the most serious unmet needs in poultry health, characterized by animal suffering and compromised welfare. Mortality and production losses are a significant threat for farmers.

The pathogen

Histomonas meleagridis

A protozoan parasite - a flagellate - with a complex biology and the causative agent of blackhead disease. A well-defined monoxenic attenuated clonal culture is the basis for our vaccine and the focus of our scientific work.

Organism
Protozoan parasite
Morphology
Flagellate
Species
*Histomonas meleagridis*
Class
Emerging veterinary pathogen

The disease

Blackhead disease

syn. Histomonosis · Histomoniasis

Once well controlled, blackhead disease has re-emerged following the withdrawal of efficacious drugs. The clinical picture is severe and the production impact is substantial — yet no licensed prophylaxis or therapy is currently available.

Animal welfare
Animal suffering
Substantial morbidity and mortality, especially in turkey flocks, together with a serious welfare concern for both turkeys and chickens.
Animal health
Emerging disease
A re-emerging condition in modern poultry production with no specific tools available to veterinarians and producers.
Industry impact
Economic losses
Outbreaks lead to significant losses across production cycles and compromise the long-term sustainability of farms.
Regulatory gap
No licensed medication
Following the withdrawal of efficacious drugs, the industry has been left without a licensed prophylactic or therapeutic option.
